Getting to Know Freya
Tell us a little about yourself—what drew you to your craft, and how did your journey begin?
I can't say there's anything specific that drew me to the world of graphic design, it just seemed to pull me in like I was always meant to be here. Even as a kid I had favourite billboards - so maybe that's where it all began! I didn't even know what a graphic designer was back then.
What excites you most about the work you do?
Seeing a vision come to life. There's something very satisfying about watching it all click into place and knowing when it's hit the mark.
What’s one project or piece of work that you’re most proud of, and why?
I created a promotional box design for Copic. It's the project I'm most proud of because it represents how far I've come. 13 year old Freya used to beg her mum for Copic markers for Christmas, and there I was designing something for them. It was and still is an incredible moment for me. I got a physical copy of the box and it's on proud display in my office.
Every creative journey has its challenges—what’s one obstacle you’ve overcome, and how did it shape you?
Redundancy. I left my first design job through voluntary redundancy, which was stressful enough. Then I got let go last year in August and involuntary redundancy is even less fun. But rather than let it crush me, it lit a fire and I created Faeble Arts. So losing a job that I thought was a core part of my future instead gave me the tools to create my own and I'm so happy I took that leap.
If you could capture the essence of your creative style in three words, what would they be?
Sleek, refined, fun.
The Emerald Agency believes in storytelling in all its forms. How do you see your work as part of a larger story?
Design is visual storytelling through and through, I see it as taking a brand's personality and showing the world who they are. As a business you can tell people who you are, but I believe in the connection that is created when they can see it too.
Creativity and collaboration often go hand in hand. What does being a creative partner mean to you?
I strongly believe that creativity can't exist in a bubble. Working together brings the best of our skill sets together to create something even better and that allows our creativity to continue to grow.
What’s a dream project you’d love to work on in the future?
I would love to create a book cover for a published work. I've made many passion project covers, but I'd love to help an author tell their story.
Lastly, what’s a piece of advice you’d give to other creatives looking to make an impact with their work?
I would say that stubbornness is key. It can be easy to let creative blocks get the best of you or get overwhelmed by life in general. But just keep going. Even if it's only a small step every day. Progress is progress.
